Rotor Asia Masters 2019 – Day 2 – Results

Today was Day 2 of the Rotor Asia Masters 2019, which is the largest RC helicopter competition in China currently. This competition has drawn about 35 competitors from countries all over the world including, USA, France, Germany, Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, Australia, Taiwan, and of course China. There are 3 levels of classes. Basic, Advanced, and Master Class. In Masters class there is Peter Hsaio, Vava Sasikkana, Marik Wiehenstroth, Sakkarin Kongthon, and Myself. All of us are Team Scorpion Pilots!

Going into day 2 the Scores were as follows.

This day there would be 2 more rounds of freestyle for the Basic and Advanced pilots, then the Masters class flew 1 Round of Freestyle and 1 round of Music. Luckily in the morning it was a bit overcast so the weather was a bit cooler which we all enjoyed.

The competition started at 9am with the Basic Pilots and there was no dramas. Following them was the advance pilots. There were a few crashes and failures but all pilots used there yellow cards. The only drama was that Youngbin Lee from Korea who was placing very well crashed also on his Yellow Card flight. This effectively put him out of the competition since there are no drop rounds.

After this there was the Masters Freestyle flights. Peter Hsaio of Taiwan started off the round with a very good flight. Then was Sakkarin Kongthon from Thailand who was putting down an amazing flight, but then he ended up crashing from being to low about 2 minutes in. This forced him to have to use his yellow card. His Re Flight was also good, but of course lost some effect since CD could not push his model as hard anymore because he had no more yellow card. Then Marik from Germany flew his flight. Marik had used his yellow card already the day before on his freestyle following his spectacular crash. After him was Vava Sasikana from Thailand who pushed his Goblin Kraken to the limits trying to make up some points and improve his placing! His flight was spectacular! Last to go was me. I was having a very good flight but unfortunately due to the extreme heat at the event I pushed my model a bit to hard and ended up not being able to complete the flight. This forced me to use my yellow card as well. My re flight was successful though. After this round all Masters finalist were still in the running.

After this there was the final round of freestyle for the Basic and Advanced level pilots. Since this was the last round all pilots were pushing their models and their skills to the maximum! What this also meant was that there was quite a fair few of spectacular crashes!

Then there was the last music round of the Masters. Going in to this round 4 out of the 5 pilots had already used their Yellow cards so it was still anyones bet as to what could happen. Since all rounds are counted, if any pilot crashed or had a failure he would be out of the contest.

Luckily all pilots flew and finished there flights and they were some of the most spectacular I ever saw! A we find videos we will for sure post them for you!

Following this there was the Speed Cup. The speed pilots would fly 2 rounds. There was 8 pilots and they all flew both rounds. Speed flying can be very risky and often have some crazy crashes but luckily no pilots had any problems or failures!

Then there was a new special event for this competition. Danny Wang called it the “30 Seconds Challenge” What this was was the Master Level Pilots could go out and do a single maneuver for 30 Seconds and try to win over the crowd with their single most impressive move. CD started off the competition with some very low and aggressive pro tic tocs that also rotated around he vertical axis. The crowd loved this! Then Marik flew and did a very tight rolling circle maneuver which was very technical and entertaining. Then was my self who did a sort of horizantle 8 maneuver with low pull outs which the crowd seemed to love! Then Vava went doing a tumbling hurricane which was very aggressive. Lastly was Peter Hsiao who did some low pyro rainbows in a circle.

After this the crowd voted for who they wanted to win and it was a tie between Myself and CD! So Danny decided to do another round to determine the winner. CD went first with doing a very tight nose down funnel with pitch pumps. Then I went and just did a very high nose dive with rolls. After this the crowd voted again and nominated CD to be the winner! CD won a extra 1000rmb for this!

Then we went straight into the award ceremony. There was some good prize money on the line. Over 32,000 RMB up for grabs!

Before the Award ceremony started they gave some special awards to influential people of the event. There was awards for the owner of the flying club, also Tom Khosit from Tom Motor, Anny Chen from Gaui, for supporting and bringing lots of competition pilots to the event. There was also awards for Danny Wang himself for organizing the event, and also to Jake Shen for helping Danny.

The results were as follows.

For Speed cup there was a tie for 1st between Ryan Chiu, and Peter Hsaio. They flew the same helicopter so it makes sense that they had the same speed!

After the awards there was the infamous Victory flights for the winners of each round! The basic Pilot flew great and survived the flight. The advanced winner Heng Kitchana heli lasted about 30 seconds before doing a full speed overspeed into the ground! The CD did a amazing flight that lasted till the end of the flight then he crashed in the autorotation!

After the awards there was a huge raffle which people could buy tickets to enter into. There was donations from many sponsors including Scorpion, Mikado, SAB, Gaui, etc etc

Congratulations to all pilots! And also to all Scorpion Pilots. Out of the top 5 in all classes nearly all were flying Scorpion Power Systems!

I had a great time at this event! Well done to Danny Wang for organizing such a great event! Can’t wait till next year!

Rotor Asia Masters 2019 – Day 1 Review and Report

Saturday the 24th marks the start of the largest RC helicopter competition in China.

This even which is hosted by Danny Wang is in its 3rd year and with every year it seems to get bigger and better. This year there are more international pilots, more sponsors, and more prize money! The weather is hot and humid which makes tough conditions for the pilots and models but it is nothing we can’t handle!

The amount of preparation and work put in to the event by Danny Wang is very evident as the feeling at the event is one which is very professional and official. Also the flying facility is really something impressive. It has a huge grass runway, along with a hanger to store models, restaurant, cafe, and bathroom facilities!

The competition has different levels for basic Pilots, advanced pilots, and then Masters/ International Class. There are pilots such as Marik Wiehenstroth from Germany, Sakarin Kongthon and Vava from Thailand, Peter Hsaio and Ryan Chiu from Taiwan, myself from the USA, and many others from France, Korea, Australia and more. The format will be 2 flight format, Music and Freestyle. However one interesting point was that in the freestyle, before starting the flight, all pilots had to do one set maneuver. A 4 point tick tock which they were judged on how precisely they did it, and then this would be added to your score.

Today we all arrived at the field and were shocked at how many spectators there was. The event was very busy with many people eager to see the RC helicopters fly. There was an opening ceremony which also had dance performances and presentations. We all felt very welcomed at this event. Following the opening ceremonies there were some sponsor demos from Mikado, Gaui, and SAB.

Then there was a lunch prepared for all pilot which was very good typical Chinese Spicy food!

After this the competition started. First to fly was the Basic Pilots who flew there freestyle round. This consisted of a lot of local pilots from China and also surrounding countries such as Thailand and Malaysia. Following them was the Advance class who also flew there freestyle flight.

After these 2 rounds then there was the Masters Class. Masters Class would fly 2 round. The first being the Freestyle, then followed by the Flight to Music.

Peter Hsaio from Team Gaui and Team Scorpion, started the round off and had a very good flight going, but unfortunately towards the end he had a Mechanical Failure which resulted in a crash. This forced him to have to re fly using his yellow card. However his yellow card flight was very good and will keep him in the competition.

Next was Sakkarin CD Kongthon from Team Mikado and Team Scorpion. CD is the current World Champion of RC Helicopters having won Global 3D earlier this year. He delivered a very high charged and aggressive, yet innovative and technical flight! One of the best I ever saw!

Following this was Marik Wiehenstroth of Team Mikado and Team Scorpion. Marik had a amazing flight going but unfortunately it ended abruptly about a minute in when he had his Spindle Bolt come out! Causing the blades to eject and then spectacularly free fall to the ground! This was caught on camera by Dan Smyth. Check out the link here! Marik also used his Yellow card and did a good flight so he is still in the running.

After this was Vava from Team SAB and Team Scorpion. Vava did a great flight. He is a great up and coming pilot from Thailand.

Lastly there was me who flew my Logo 700 with Scorpion Power System. I was very pleased with the flight I did and was happy that I had no issues!

Immediately after this we all put fresh batteries in and got ready for the Flight to Music round. All pilots flew clean rounds with no crashes!

As of the end of the event they had not posted Scores yet for the Masters Class so we will see tomorrow how the finishing is and will see how it changes in the finals!

1st Annual Full Pitch FunFly – Gloucester, UK – June 12-14

England has always been an important staple in the RC Helicopter scene. They were known for hosting the most prestigious RC Helicopter competition, 3D Masters, back in the 2000’s and to this day it hosts a large number of local competitions and breads many competitive pilots! Additionally many of Englands RC Helicopter events are also usually mini competitions for local pilots to compete in.
However, what England didn’t have a lot of was just “Fun Flys” with an emphasis on FUN. That is until now!

This year on July 12-14, England hosted the “Full Pitch Fun Fly” in Gloucester which was put on by Rob Bingham, and George Jones who are well known in the RC Heli scene for there helpful nitro tips, and equally their hilarious banter and good fun. Rob and George had become good friends of mine so when they invited me to come to their event I was for sure ready to go!

The event was held in a private farmers field about 10 minutes from town, which was exactly what you look for in a RC helicopter flying field, a BIG open piece of grass. Rob and George had even moved down the grass around the flight line and pilot stations. I showed up to the event on Friday morning and there were several people already there at the event with their caravans set up. I quickly got my helis out of my case and built up and ready to fly.

Other pro pilots in attendance were Aaron Cole, Stu Smith, and Ethan Williams who were throwing down some very entertaining flights for the attendees. The day went on and in the night the fun continued with some food and drinks in typical British fashion.

On Day 2, Saturday, which was the main day, I arrived at the field and saw that the number of attendees had ateleast doubled. There were many cars and caravans and pilots on the flight line. The weather was perfect with good sun, scattered clouds, a slight breeze but mainly, NO RAIN! Was the best weather you could ask for in England. There were 3 flight stations on the field with people lined up all day long ready to get some flights in.

One of the nicest things which Rob had organized was a huge event BBQ on Saturday night. The meat was fresh from the farmer who’s field we were on, and so the whole event was treated to fresh burgers cooked on site! The line was long cause everyone wanted some food after a long day of flying, but there was plenty to go around, and more!

After this there was the event Raffle which had donations from many companies! Rob had reached out to many people and had acquired a huge tail full of raffle prizes from about 18 different event sponsors. Including helicopter kits, charging cases, batteries, blades, fuel, and of course some donations from Scorpion Power System.

As the sun went down a few bon fires got started and everyone gathered around to stay warm and watch some great night flying by Aaron Cole and a few other pilots. The night didn’t end till around 1am and by then we were all tired and ready to go to bed.

On Sunday morning it was a very relaxed atmosphere at the event. People were flying still but mostly just relaxing and enjoying the time at the event. Towards the evening people started packing up and heading out and in the night I left to catch a train back to London where I would catch my flight back home.

All in all this was a fantastic event. It was the very definition of what a “FunFly: should be. Relaxed, entertaining, good company, and good location. I certainly can’t wait to go back next year and I hope I’ll see more of you there next time!

OXY 5 MEG – Ircha Debut and Review

A few months ago OXY helicopters debuted their new 550 size model called the OXY 5. This model was unique in that it was designed to work from 500mm blades all the way up to 570mm blades. Additionally it could use either 6s or 12s power systems. Read our article about the power system options of the OXY 5 here.

Just before Ircha 2019 OXY released that they were going to be showing something new at the event. It would be called the “OXY 5 MEG” . MEG is the abbreviation of “MEGA”. What they showed at Ircha was a Stretch Kit for the OXY 5 which would allow you to use 625mm blades.

This is something which OXY is known for. On all of their models typically they release a standard version of the kit, and then additionally a Stetch kit for users who like a bigger rotor disc feeling.

The new OXY 5 MEG is perfect for a Scorpion Power System. Team OXY and Team Scorpion pilot Rasmus Jakobsen showed his power system of choice at Ircha and it is as follows.

There still seems to be sparse videos out about this helicopter but for those who saw it at Ircha in person, they saw that it was one POWERFUL helicopter! Obvisouly very light and strong design. We did find one video however from Ircha of Rasmus flying it under the lights.

Ircha Jamboree 2019 – One of the Best Irchas Ever!

This year marked the 30th Anniversary of the Worlds Largest R/C Helicopter event, known as the Ircha Jamboree.

The event is a week long and attracts pilots from all over the USA and also the world! The event is hosted at the 1000 acre AMA Flying field in Muncie, Indiana. The main flight line is about 3/4 of a mile long (over 1km!), and there is additional flight lines for Scale Flying, Small Electric Flying, and Speed Cup Flying.

The Ircha Jamboree is packed constantly with Sponsor Demonstrations, Contests, Sponsor Parties and much more! It also appeals to multiple aspects of the R/C Helicopter discipline. There is the main flight (site 4) which is for 3D and sport flying only. Then off to the West side there is another flight line for Scale helicopters. Then on Site 3 there is the speed cup flight line. Then in-between the 2 there is a small field for small electric helis.

In its peak in 2015 Ircha attracted over 1200+ pilots from around the world. However with the decline of the hobby over the last few years Ircha attendance was also down quite dramatically. However I am very happy to report that this year was the first year which attendance was HIGHER then it was the year before! And not just by a little, there were several hundred more pilots in attendance this year then there were in 2018. This is a very positive thing and a good indication of the recovery and status of our hobby!

Mikado USA is our US Distributor for Scorpion and they had a great booth setup for Mikado and Scorpion.

On Thursday of the event one of the main attractions was the “Try it before you buy it” event. On the main flight line all day long there were manufactures present with model set up on buddy box systems. Attendees could then go up and try a model they were interested in, to get a feel for it. This was a great way to get people interested in a manufactures product!

It was great to see so many manufactures representing their products at Ircha!

On Friday in addition to the standard sponsor demos, there was also the main event in the afternoon, which was the Ircha Auto Limbo Contest!!! This was a contest where the pilot had to start high in a autorotation. Then fly down quickly to gain rpm, go under limbo streamer about 5ft off the ground, and then land on a spot! But it wasn’t just this, the point of the competition was who could do all of that, in addition to doing the most entertaining 3d maneuver while going under the limbo!! The final contestants ended up being myself, Scorpion Pilot Mitch Marozas, and 10 year old Rhys Wyatt from Australia! The auto I was trying to do was come inverted under the limbo, then push up and back over the limbo then come through a 2nd time right side up. However I hit the streamer and ended up crashing. Mitch Marozas was trying to fly under the limbo inverted with pirouettes, and then land on a table! However he also hit the PVC pole and damaged his helicopter. The only one to survive was Rhys who cam in an inverted auto under the limbo, then successfully flipped his Heli over and landed on the spot! The crowd overwhelmingly cheered for him and voted him the champion of the 2019 Ircha Auto Limbo Contest!

After this at 5pm there was the Scorpion Pizza Party which offered free food and beverages for all! The tent was full of people wanting some food and drink after a long day! Then after this there was a beer garden on site served by waitresses from Outback Steak House!

Saturday the main day of the event, was when the principle sponsors had their demos the in the evening there would be the Battle of the Brands Contest. The day started off with the Scorpion Power Hour Demos. Scorpion had their best pilots flying such as, Nick Maxwell, Bobby Watts, Jesse Kavros, Chris Diamante, Travis Reyes, Brendan Hire, and Rasmus Jakobson! Scorpion gave away several thousands of dollars worth of Motors and ESC’s to the watching crowd. So they enjoyed the worlds best flying demonstrations, as well as free stuff! Doesn’t get much better then this! Immediately following the Scorpion Demo was the Mikado Demo, which also had great Scorpion Pilots such as Myself, Jesse Kavros, Lucas Hatz and Simon Hatz!

Right after these 2 demos which ended at noon then I had arranged for a hour of a new “fun” competition. The name of the competition was the Kyle Dahl 50/50 Challenge. This competition took 6 pilots, Myself, Lucas Hatz, Rasumus Jacobson, Lukas Biblich, Ben Storick, and Aaron Cole, and put them against each other in a crowed judged,Man on Man competition format. However the kicker was that there was 3 rounds of flying, all 45 seconds long. In the first round the pilots had 45 seconds to do a freestyle routine, where the model could NOT go inverted! So all maneuvers had to be done right side up! Then the winners of this round, Ben Storick, Myself, Lucas Hatz, and Lukas Biblich advance to the next, where again we had 45 seconds, but we could only fly inverted!! After this round there was just 2 pilots remaining, myself, and Lucas Hatz. In this final round we had 45 seconds to do a no restrictions freestyle flight! At the end the crowd judged that Lucas Hatz was the winner!

After this there were many more demos from other sponsors until 5:30 when a huge dinner started served by outback steak house, then at 6pm when everyone got their food and got settled down started the Ircha Battle of the Brands contest! The battle of the brands format is as follows. Each of the Sponsors are able to nominate one pilot to fly for them in a single flight music freestyle competition. The winner of this contest is determined by the crowd, who votes through the Ircha App which they would have downloaded prior to the competition or through the Ircha Website. For Team Scorpion there was long time Team Pilot Bobby Watts who flew a high charged flight to heavy metal music with his Goblin 700 with Scorpion Motor and ESC! In the end the winner was Kan Poonoi, with 2nd place being Kyle Stacy, and in 3rd Place myself flying My Logo 700 with Scorpion Motor and ESC.

The competition was a huge success with nearly the entirety of the attendees showing up to watch it!

After this there was again the beer garden along with the HUGE Ircha Raffle! The Ircha Raffle had prizes from all the sponsors as well as many big ticket items such as a Goblin Kraken and new Diablo Nitro helicopter, Mikado Logo Helicopter, and of course MANY donations from Scorpion Power Systems!

This went on into the night, and then once the sun set the Ircha Night Flying competition started! There was 2 categories. The first Category was the traditional Night Flying where pilots had elaborate lights on the helicopter choreographed to music routines. The winner was Ben Storick who had one of the craziest light routines I have ever seen! Check out the video here.

After this then the construction lights came on, and started the “King of the midnight sun” Contest where pilots flew standard helicopters under the ambient light of the construction lights. There were many pilots flying such as Lucas Hatz, Simon Hatz, Rasums Jakobson, Ben Storick, Kan Poonoi, and many more along with many crashes from pilots egged on by the crowd!

All in all this was one of the BEST IRCHAS EVER! There was a new energy from the event that I have not felt in some years and this is due to the new growth and excitement surrounding our hobby once again! I already can’t wait for Ircha 2020!!!

XFCv2 Day 3 – Final Results!!

Well another XFC is in the books and we have ourselves new Champions for the 2019 competition! The final day of competition consisted of the “Finals” which was the Top 6 Pilots for Helicopters, the Top 7 for Airplanes, and the Top 3 for Jets. Going in to the finals, each class had a “predominate” leader who had a pretty healthy lead. For Helicopters that was Kevin St.Cyr (Team Scorpion), for Airplanes, Jase Dussia, and for Jets Spencer Nordquist. However, right below 1st place is where it got interesting! The points difference between places for 2nd -5th in all classes was VERY close! Sometimes as little as 10 points difference out of 1000 points!

In helicopters there was a big battle for 2nd between Alex Genovese JR, Paul Andreoli, and Justin Cook with just 20 points difference between the 3 places! Then as well in airplanes Sasha Cecconi, Santiago Perez (Team Scorpion), and Bryant Mack battled for 3rd place, with just 20 points also separating the 3 positions!

What this meant is that there was going to be some exciting flying on finals day as pilots were going to be pushing their skills and their models to the limits tying to get as many points as possible!

For the Finals round the pilots would fly 4 flights. 2 x Known Rounds, and 2 x Freestyle Rounds. If you aren’t familiar with the competition rules make sure you check out the first Blog post about XFC Day #1 where I explain the rules and format of the contest.

All finalist flew exceptionally well and pushed hard. Sometimes to hard! As seen here Santiago Perez was pushing hard trying to get up into 3rd place and got just a bit to low!

Spencer Nordquist was in 2nd place in Airplanes pushing hard against 1st Place Jase Dussia. Additionally he was flying in the jet category pushing his CARF Mephisto to the limits!

XFCv2 Day #2 Results and Recap (With Crash report)

Day #2 of XFC was the last day of the Prelims flights for all categories. Pilots flew their Freestyle and Known music flights again. After these rounds what the score keepers would do is take the top 3 out of the 4 flights and then average the scores and this would one “overall” result for each pilot. What this allows is that if a pilot had bad round or a crash, he would be able to drop that score, and use just his 3 best scores. These Scores would determine who would get in to the finals.

There was many hard flights and some crashes this day. The most spectacular being in the Jet category. Kim Quinette was flying a bit to low and totaled his Futura Jet! But thats competition! Push it hard to get results! Check out the *Crash video HERE *

The drama of this was that Kim Quenette who was in 2nd place of Jets, was flying the same Jet as Santiago Perez who was in 1st place. So since there was the crash, both of the top 2 pilots are now out of the contest for finals. However Santiago is still competing also in the Airplane section of the competition where he is currently in 4th place. Good luck Santiago!!

One other unique aspect of the competition is that there is a “team” event also. No this isn’t referring to a tandem flight competition, but a competition for US pilots, vs International pilots. Since this competition has many international pilots in each category there is a competition to see who will win overall, Team USA, or Team International in each of the categories. The awards for this were given out at he end of the prelims and the results for this team event as as follows.

Helicopter Team Award – International Class!
Kevin St. Cyr from Canada and Alex Genovese JR from Australia both using Scorpion Power Systems combined and average score was higher then the average score of the other US contestants.

Jet Team Award – International Class

Airplane Team Award – Team USA

XFCv2 2019 Day #1 Recap and Results

If you have been in the R/C world for any amount of time then you will have for sure heard the name “XFC” which is short for Xtreme Flight Championships. It was long known as the most prestigious R/C competition in the USA for Freestyle Airplanes and 3D Helicopters. Anybody who is anybody between 2006 – 2016 has competed in this competition before.

However in 2017 the event did not take place. But then starting in 2018 it came back new and improved as XFC v2! Before XFC was just for Airplanes and Helicopters but one of the main change was the addition of freestyle Jets to the competition! Also the Location changed from its previous home in Muncie, Indiana to Eli Field in Monticello, Illinois.

The format is that the pilots have 2 rounds. A Known Round, and a Freestyle Round. Both flights are done to music. Scorpion Power Systems is the Category Sponsor for Heli, Extreme Flight is the Category for Airplanes, and JR is the Category sponsor for Jets. The ancor sponsor is Horizon Hobbies. It is really unique to have such different aspects of the hobby all competing at the same location! This will be great for the spectators to see!

Here is a break down of the rounds which pilots flew today.

Knowns

Pilots are given 3 x Set Maneuvers and they have to incorporate these maneuvers into a music routine. They are judged on the execution of the maneuver, and the choreography of the them to the music.

Today the pilots in all categories (Airplane, Jet, and Heli) flew both rounds once. The weather was reported as Hot, with a bit of wind, but nothing that the professional pilots couldn’t handle! The pilots all flew spectacularly and there were no reported crashes!

Utah Heli Bash 2019

This year on June 7-9 was the 3rd Annual of the “Utah Heli Bash” FunFly located in Saratoga Springs, Utah. The event was hosted by the Utah Helicopter Association.

This 3rd annual event was even better then the previous years with more pro pilots, and better Raffle Prizes! There were sponsored pilots from, Team Mikado, Team Amian Hobbies, team Align and Team Scorpion, and Raffle donations from many more companies

Scorpion Pilots Kyle Dahl, Jamie Robertson, and Donnie Petche were there representing Team Scorpion.

The noon demos consisted of demos from Many helicopter pilots such as Kyle Dahl, Donnie Petche, Ben Storick, Andrew Merlino, and then additionally Airplane Demos from Brandon Reimschiissel (Team AJ Aircraft)

The event wasn’t just for RC pilots, but also was advertised to the general public to spread awareness about our hobby. The crowd which attended the noon demos enjoyed them immensely!

For the raffle there were big prizes such as a Logo 700 from Mikado USA, a new Goblin Kraken from SAB, as well as many other ESC, and Swag from Scorpion USA, along with other donations from many other companies.

Then one really great part of this event was the night flying on Saturday Night! The organizers arranged some spot lights and a fire to keep everyone warm and then there was great night flying from Pros and Normal Pilots alike! Additionally there was airplane demos as well!
